CopyPaste Pro - revive your clippings

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

How many times have you copied one thing, to accidentally replace it with something else?
Confusing I know - welcome to CopyPaste Pro. Subnamed “Time Machine for the Clipboard” it does exactly what it says on the tin.

A “Apple + C” will place your chosen copies into a clipboard. In this, you can scroll left to right to view all your clippings. You can also edit the text as CPP features a built in word processor.

This software is good for the price. The application fits into Leopard well and the menu arrangements suit brilliantly. Albeit, the softwares’ internal organs aren’t so great. A copy can hold for a second, (unable to copy, paste) which isn’t a lot but noticeable by some people (like, me..) and can get slightly annoying. There is also a floating icon which doesn’t look at all appealing ( it’s to access your clippings ) and is hard to remove.
Other than that, give CopyPaste Pro a go, it does do what it says, even if it takes a while to get there.

This Universal program is compatible with 10.4 (Tiger) and now 10.5 (Leopard).
It costs $20.00 from the ScriptSoftware store but as always a limited demo is provided.

Fed up of loosing your copies? Give CopyPaste Pro a try.

Review: GelaSkins

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

I recently had the opportunity to test out some GelaSkins from GelaSkins.com. GelaSkins are removable artwork for Mac Laptops, iPods, iPhones, the RARZ and even PC Laptops. The GelaSkins website has a ton of designs for all of these products, and its a very cost effective way of putting some style on your device. For our review we got 3 different styles of GelaSkins and 3 different sizes.

Application

To apply the GelaSkins it is relatively easy once you have it in place, and if you do not like the placement, just peel it up. They are printed on a 3M adhesive that does not bubble, but unfortunately, it can get creased. The iPod Touch GelaSkin took me a matter of seconds to apply, next I got to work applying the MacBook GelaSkin, it took me a little longer to get the placement right, but it was very easy to do, and looks great.

Quality

The quality of these GelaSkins is superb. They come in a clear sleeve with application directions, and they are pretty tough, and we realized in our testing. Printed on 3M Adhesive makes them removable with no residue left behind. The GelaSkins are also fit and cut to the exact size, be it MacBook or iPod, they fit perfectly.

Conculsion

I would highly recommend GelaSkins to anyone who wants to add some personality to they laptop, iPod or cell phone.

Product: GelaSkins
Price: $29.95/Laptop, $12.95-14.95/iPod, $14.95/iPhone, $12.95/RARZ
Availability: From the GelaSkins Website

Review: Griffin Elevator

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

The Griffin Elevator is a Laptop stand designed for the Apple Laptops. Its purpose is to lift the laptop up to a more comfortable height then being on your desk. I have been using the Griffin Elevator since mid December, and I have really enjoyed using it.

The design is quite simple, 2 metal arches and a clear base. Along the top is rubber to help keep the computer in place, and there is also rubber pads on the bottom to keep it from sliding around.

Overall, I really like this product, and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to get their laptop up off their desks.

BusySync

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Rating: 4/5

BusySync is an easy way to sync multiple iCal calendars between multiple macs. It works effortly and easily over bonjour for no complicated configuration sharing. Multi-user editing works great for Family’s, Coworkers, Friends or anyone on your local network, and password support with privileges allow you to share calendar with different access settings, such as Read/Write, Read only, or no access. There are also some other very good features such as Offline access to remote calendars, with the content automaticially syncing.

I highly reccomend BusySync for sharing calendars, the only problem I have with it is the need to buy a license for each computer you use BusySync with.

1 to 4 copies $19.95
5 to 9 copies $17.96
10 to 24 copies $15.96

Final Cut Studio Review on EDIT-XTREEM’s Blog

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

I have just posted a full Final Cut Studio 2 Review on my blog. You can check it out at
http://edit.xtreem.iappblog.com/2007/11/07/lights-camera-action-final-cut-studio-2-review/
and if you like it you can digg it at
http://digg.com/apple/Lights_Camera_Actionh_Final_Cut_Studio_2_Review.

For video editors on the mac, there are a few options. Those doing home videos usually stick with iMovie, Apple’s editing program included with iLife. But those that want to do more advance things, or even want to become professional usually turn to Apple’s Final Cut Studio. Apple released the second version of Final Cut Studio in mid April this year. It includes 6 main applications, Final Cut Pro 6, Motion 3, SoundTrack Pro 2, Color, Compressor 3 and DVD Studio Pro 4. This is the first major release to support the Intel Processors, a .1 release was made available as a crossgrade, but it was not a full release. There have been tons of upgrades to all of the applications.

In this review I am going to cover all 6 of the applications included in Final Cut Studio 2.

Leopard Feature: Spaces

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Rating: 4.5/5

I’ve tried several implementations of virtual desktops on multiple platforms. While Spaces is not the slickest looking, it doesn’t utilize superfluous effects over usability. Spaces also is also vastly better than other virtual desktop solutions because it’s supported and included in more machines.

Spaces has some key features that make it truly great. One, Spaces is tightly integrated with Exposé. Activating All Windows will show only the windows in the current space. Additionally, if all spaces are shown in a bird’s eye view, it will show all windows in all spaces. The second major feature of Spaces is application binding, called “Application Assignments. The crux of virtual desktops is having certain application windows appearing in specific spaces automatically, and this is what Application Assignments does. These automatic assignments take away most of the work of moving windows to specific spaces. The last major feature of Spaces is the one most virtual desktop implementations lack: a bird’s eye view of all spaces. This view not only allows you to see which window is where, but also move windows effortlessly between spaces.

Spaces has some other convenient ways of moving windows to other spaces. You can drag windows to the edge of the screen nearest the other space. For example, to move a Safari window to the space to the left of it, drag it to the left edge and hold it there for a few seconds. Spaces shows a nice bezel-like window which displays which space you just switched to. Spaces also has numerous ways of switching to other spaces: keyboard shortcuts, a menu bar item, a Dock icon, and more.

Spaces is not without its problems though. Individual spaces can only have a non-descriptive number for a name, rather than a name like Communications or Web Browsing. Spaces also has a minor bug where windows appear in the wrong space. I’ve encountered this only once in about a week of owning Leopard. It happened when I activated iCal’s preference window and it appeared in the space above the current one.

Virtual desktops are great for organizing a large quantity of windows —therefore providing a less distracting interface. Despite some minor deficiencies, Spaces is simply the best implementation of virtual desktops I’ve ever used.

Price: included with Leopard, $129 or £85

MarsEdit 2.0

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Rating: 5/5

Mars Edit 2.0 is the latest release of Red Sweater Software’s powerful desktop blogging tool. Mars Edit allows you to create, edit and post from a desktop application to many popular blogging platforms including Wordpress, Moveable Type, Blogger, and many others. It is extremely easy to use, you just enter in you blog’s URL, username and password, and its setup. It also directs you to setting up a free Wordpress.com blogging account, or Blogger account if you do not have a blog. It scans through your flickr library and automatticly adds them to your post with the click of a button.

The new version of Mars Edit includes a beautiful new interface that highlights the features, and is also extremely simple and easy to use. There is also integration of Flickr, a photo sharing service, which allows you to upload your photos for free to their site, and showcase them publicly. Mars Edit makes use of this service and allows you to browse and search your photos within the application. There are also tons of tiny tweaks making the application work much better. At just $29.95, the choice is simple, and if you are a past purchaser, then the upgrade is $9.95.

I have enjoyed Mars Edit 2.0 so much that I have made it my primary way to post to both iAppblog and my personal blog.

Stuffit 11

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Rating: 3.5/5

Stuffit 11 Deluxe is a suite of seven applications for compressing and expressing your files. For compressing there is DropStuff. You simply take a file and drop it into this app. It allows you to create a Stuffit file (.sitx), a Zip file (.zip) or a Tar (.tar). For your expanding you have StuffIt Expander. Just like DropStuff, you just drop your compressed file in, but in this case, it uncompresses.

The only thing that I dislike about Stuffit 11 Deluxe is its high price tag of $79.99 for a compression/uncompression suite. Many of the functions of Stuffit Deluxe can be proformed by free apps, but Stuffit Deluxe gives you the avantage of having all your actions in one location.

Check It

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Rating: 4/5

Over the last few day I have had the pleasure of playing and reviewing Check It from SmithMicro Software. Check it is a system performance suite for mac that allows you to unclutter, backup and maintain your mac. It includes 3 applications, EMC Retrospect Express, Spring Cleaning and TechTool Platinum.

Spring Cleaning is an application that allows you to clean up your computer and remove unnecessary applications, documents, pictures, movie or other files. There are three feature that I find to be most important, a feature called sizemanager that allows you to have a graphical view of all the file’s sizes on your mac. There is also the Secure Delete feature that securely deletes sensitive information. I also like the quick compare feature which allows you to quickly spot differences in files.

EMC Retrospect Express is a backup application designed to simply, quickly and easily backup your files. It allows you to backup to internal or external hard drives, flash media drives including “thumb drives” and DVD/CDs. Retrospect has an amazing Fast Backup feature which analyzes your files on your first backup, and for subsequent backups, only backups the changed files, making a quick, easy backup. Another great feature is the ability to backup preferences and settings.

TechTool Platinum is a great app for maintaining and checking your mac. If you mac ever gets into an unbootable state, just boot from your edrive, a mini partition containing a mini version of OS X, just enough to get your mac backup and running. You can preform comprehensive tests on your macintosh from right inside the application.

Overall Check it is a great suite of applications and I highly recommend it to users who want to keep their macintosh in tip top condition.
