The Smartest Thing Apple Has Ever Done?

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

By making all developers of iPhone Applications required to use Xcode to create their apps, which is a mac only application, iPhone Developers are forced to use a mac as their development platform. The other hidden benefit of having these developers on the mac platform is the creation of mac apps, and since the iPhone Apps run on Cocoa, the developers already know the best coding language for mac.

The result? Tons of iPhone Apps, tons of mac sales and tons of mac apps, all in the next few months.

Now I am not saying that loosing a couple developers from the Windows development market is going to kill Microsoft, and nor will it affect the quality of app for Windows, but it will get the developers thinking about the iPhone platform, which, like it or not for them, is very similar to that of the mac.

So what does this mean for Mac users? Well I can’t say for sure, but it seems to mean that there will be more developers, meaning more apps, which creates more competition, which will probably make these developers strive for higher standards, and this is where Snow Leopard comes in.

So as iPhone Apps begin to sell, and get ton of attention for Apple, Snow Leopard comes along, giving another reason for these overwhelming numbers of iPhone Developers to start developing for mac.

What does this mean in the long run though? Quite frankly, I am not sure, I believe it means there will be more iPhone Apps, more Mac Apps and more devlopers in the community, but what does it mean for the end user? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

What do you think? Smartest Thing Apple Has Ever Done? I think so. Post a comment and let me know what you think.

Mac OS X Music Video - You’ve got to see this. UPDATED.

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

MacRumors member dennisalio has created an excellent video. It’s taken him three months to create and I say it’s totally worth it. Here’s a quote from his thread:

I’m a VERY frequent lurker I guess, filmmaker and huge Mac fan.

I just shot a music video that takes place on the Mac OSX desktop. It’s really cool… It uses the Mac OSX template as a canvas. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean. Please link it up if you’re a Mac fan!!! =) I promise you won’t be disappointed (because I wasted 3 months of my life making it hahaha)

It’s really fantastic, he should submit it to Apple. For those who haven’t seen it yet here it is.

Good work Dennis!

Update: Seems there are a few problems with Youtube on our end, just have to link it.

(Just a note, as an active member on MacRumors, I saw this before it hit anywhere.)

Final Cut Studio Review on EDIT-XTREEM’s Blog

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

I have just posted a full Final Cut Studio 2 Review on my blog. You can check it out at
http://edit.xtreem.iappblog.com/2007/11/07/lights-camera-action-final-cut-studio-2-review/
and if you like it you can digg it at
http://digg.com/apple/Lights_Camera_Actionh_Final_Cut_Studio_2_Review.

For video editors on the mac, there are a few options. Those doing home videos usually stick with iMovie, Apple’s editing program included with iLife. But those that want to do more advance things, or even want to become professional usually turn to Apple’s Final Cut Studio. Apple released the second version of Final Cut Studio in mid April this year. It includes 6 main applications, Final Cut Pro 6, Motion 3, SoundTrack Pro 2, Color, Compressor 3 and DVD Studio Pro 4. This is the first major release to support the Intel Processors, a .1 release was made available as a crossgrade, but it was not a full release. There have been tons of upgrades to all of the applications.

In this review I am going to cover all 6 of the applications included in Final Cut Studio 2.

Leopard Feature: Spaces

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Rating: 4.5/5

I’ve tried several implementations of virtual desktops on multiple platforms. While Spaces is not the slickest looking, it doesn’t utilize superfluous effects over usability. Spaces also is also vastly better than other virtual desktop solutions because it’s supported and included in more machines.

Spaces has some key features that make it truly great. One, Spaces is tightly integrated with Exposé. Activating All Windows will show only the windows in the current space. Additionally, if all spaces are shown in a bird’s eye view, it will show all windows in all spaces. The second major feature of Spaces is application binding, called “Application Assignments. The crux of virtual desktops is having certain application windows appearing in specific spaces automatically, and this is what Application Assignments does. These automatic assignments take away most of the work of moving windows to specific spaces. The last major feature of Spaces is the one most virtual desktop implementations lack: a bird’s eye view of all spaces. This view not only allows you to see which window is where, but also move windows effortlessly between spaces.

Spaces has some other convenient ways of moving windows to other spaces. You can drag windows to the edge of the screen nearest the other space. For example, to move a Safari window to the space to the left of it, drag it to the left edge and hold it there for a few seconds. Spaces shows a nice bezel-like window which displays which space you just switched to. Spaces also has numerous ways of switching to other spaces: keyboard shortcuts, a menu bar item, a Dock icon, and more.

Spaces is not without its problems though. Individual spaces can only have a non-descriptive number for a name, rather than a name like Communications or Web Browsing. Spaces also has a minor bug where windows appear in the wrong space. I’ve encountered this only once in about a week of owning Leopard. It happened when I activated iCal’s preference window and it appeared in the space above the current one.

Virtual desktops are great for organizing a large quantity of windows —therefore providing a less distracting interface. Despite some minor deficiencies, Spaces is simply the best implementation of virtual desktops I’ve ever used.

Price: included with Leopard, $129 or £85
